Teshuvah, Day 15

Day 7 of the 119th Psalm, verses 49-56.

Zayin
“49 Remember Your Word to Your servant, in which You have made me hope.
“50 This is my comfort in my affliction, that Your promise gives me life.
“51 The insolent utterly deride me, but I do not turn away from Your Law.
“52 When I think of Your rules from of old, I take comfort, O YHWH.
“53 Hot indignation seizes me because of the wicked, who forsake Your Law.
“54 Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my sojourning.
“55 I remember Your Name in the night, O YHWH, and keep Your Law.
“56 This blessing has fallen to me, that I have kept Your precepts.”
– Psalm 119:49-56

The Breakdown

Verse 49: We can have hope in His Word because He is faithful.

Verse 50: God’s promises give us life when we need comfort.

Verse 51: No matter how much persecution we receive, we will not turn away from His Law.

Verse 52: The writer calls God’s commandments the rules of old. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His rules don’t change.

Verse 53: We should have righteous anger toward those who despise and reject God’s Law, but also have compassion and pray for those who reject God’s ways. He desires that no one perish but everyone should come to repentance.

Verse 54: The writer says God’s statutes are a song during his time of sojourning. Likewise, we are in a foreign land awaiting His return. We should sing the praises of His Law.

Verse 55: Remember His Name in the night. Whether that is literally being awoken in the night or metaphorically speaking of walking in a dark place, we should desire to keep His Law.

Verse 56: Harkening back to Deuteronomy 28 again, blessings will come to those who keep His precepts.

Lord, I thank you for your faithfulness in all things. Keep me in line with Your Law even when persecution comes. Help me to reach those who don’t know Your ways. Amen.

Shalom.
