Passion Week – Day #5

It was now Monday, the second day of the week, the 12th of the month. As Luke recorded (Luke 21:37-38), Yeshua spent the night on the Mount of Olives and returned to the temple to teach some more. Nothing more is recorded about what He taught aside from all the things that were mentioned yesterday. It could be that the parables and teachings were spread between Sunday and Monday, or He could have been teaching on any number of other things, as John reported at the end of his book that Yeshua did many other things that have never been written down (John 21:25).

Matthew records that Yeshua tells His disciples that “the Passover is two days away, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified” (Matt. 26:2). The chief priests and elders plotted to arrest Yeshua and kill Him some sly way, but not during the Feast (Matt. 26:3-5, Mark 14:1-2, Luke 22:1-2).

Yeshua and His disciples then returned to Bethany for another meal, this time at Simon the Leper’s house (Matt. 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9). This is the other account of Yeshua being anointed with expensive perfume. Neither Matthew nor Mark name the woman, but both say it was an alabaster jar that was broken open and the oil poured over His head. Matthew says the disciples, not just Judas, complained about the waste. Mark just says it was some of those present that were indignant. Either way, Yeshua rebukes them and says it was to prepare His body for burial. It was then that Judas went to the High Priest and made arrangements to betray Yeshua for 30 pieces of silver. He then looked for the opportunity to hand Him over (Matt. 26:14-16, Mark 14:10-11, Luke 22:1-6). It would have to be soon. They didn’t want to kill Him during the Feast and it would begin in less than two days.

Tomorrow, His passion is poured out on His disciples.
